  • Coaches Corner

There are six groups for Nancy Greene this year. Coaches will often work with two groups together.  This allows the kids to learn from two different coaches and each other.

Parent Action Coaches require lunch supervisors and help with fence set-up  During lunch, which is from 11:30 to 12:00 coaches go out and set up gates and courses.  They need a parent from each group to supervise the lunch time period.  We also need a few parents to help in the morning with course fence set-up.  Please speak with a coach when you drop off your kids in the morning if you can volunteer to supervise or for fence set-up.  We need our lunches and snacks to be nut free (all types of nuts) as we have at least two kids who are very allergic to nuts.

K1 and K2 racers are making us proud.  They are all doing there great in races.  Cameron Mahler got a 4th, 3rd and then gold at the Edmonton ski club race.  Tianda Carrol won a gold in Lake Louise.

  • Up-coming Nancy Greene Races:

Feb 2 and 3 Provincial Race at Marmot –for ages 8, 9 and 10.  Coaches will select racers to enter the provincial racers and notify you A.S.A.P.

Feb 10, Edmonton Race – This fun filled event is great for all Nancy all our racers. This race is a super intro to racing at a small hill.

At these races we all try to stay at the same hotel.  This help for team spirit, and also for communication as we often have a quick meeting in the morning before heading to the hill.

Parent action:  Please contact Magda Mahler to let here know if you are coming to this race (for those who did not sign the sign-up sheet at the meeting) and also to register for the hotel.  Laurie Buck has blocked some rooms for our team at a discounted rate at the Delta South. $121 + tax free parking.  She can only secure the rooms if confirm you want the room and give a visa number.

We will send more detailed information regarding the race and location closer to the date.

  • Fundraising

       Bingo Commitments/ Fund Raising,
This is our most important fund raiser.  It is part of everyone’s commitment to the team to work shifts at the Bingos.

Victoria Caffaro has been doing an excellent job organizing the Bingos and reminding members of their shifts.

Parent Action:   Once you’re signed up for a shift it is ultimately your responsibility to work it or to secure a replacement worker.

What happens if you are late for your shift or don’t show up?  Our club gets fined (some fines are as high as 500.00), we lose the income for that bingo, and we risk losing Bingo as our fundraiser, as we may not be asked back to work the Bingos.  The fines are your personal financial responsibility.

So if you can’t make a signed up Bingo get another member to fill in your shift.  If that does not work, call Victoria and she may supply you with a list of potential workers who for a fee will work your Bingo.

Want to make some money?  Call Victoria and let her know you can work other peoples Bingos and what fee you would like to charge to do so.

  1. Casino – We were lucky enough to get a casino date in May as a fund raiser.   We will keep you posted and ask for workers, closer to the date of the casino.
  1.  Corporate Sponsorship.  Melissa McKenney has spearheaded our         corporate fundraising campaign.  Already we have three generous donations!  Our great thanks to:  Jasper Tramway, Mount Robson Inn and Elk Valley Coal for their donations!

Parent Action:  Melissa noted that many organizations stated that they are happy to donate to things that their employees kids are involved in.  So, if you would like to help, please ask your employers if they would like to help the Nancy Greene Ski Team.  Melissa has a fund raising letter that you could get to help approach your employers.

  1. Racer Accounts – Della Carson, our hardworking treasurer keeps and account for all Nancy Greene and KI and K2 racers.  Things that go your account will be race fees (if you participate) a share of the coaches room and board (which usually amounts to very little when spread among all racers, and bingo fines (if you personally incurred them).  They will be sent out at the end of each active month.  Please send the payments promptly.
  1. Jasper Ski Team hosting Community Dinner – Feb 24th   Due to a great positive response back from members willing to help with a community dinner, we are scheduled to host the dinner on Feb 24th.  Information will be sent out in early February.  There are no fundraising or financial commitments to this event, just our great team spirit and culinary skills!

  1.   Lions in Winter and calendar sales.  We are looking forward to hosting a movie and talk with Thomas Grandi.

Parent Action:  To help raise money for the National Ski Team and our own team we are asking everyone to pick-up and sell two beautiful Carving Canucks calendars.  (20.00 a calendar).

9.    .    Website info

To keep updated you can access information our events and ski club at our website www.jasperskiteam.com and  Alberta Alpine www.albertaalpine.com
  1. Safety Issues – Please make sure to notify coaches of any medical conditions and allergies.  Also make sure your kids come to the hill with any medical aides (asthma inhalers, EPI pens – and make sure these things are kept warm – they don’t work when frozen).

11.  Invitation to Parents to do an informal ski day together!  Gilbert (“really knows women”) will call us the night before to let us know when he is available.  Great way to improve our own skiing –so we can keep up (ha-good luck) with our kids and see what skills they are learning.

Bingo 2007-2008

If you have not signed up for bingos, please contact our bingo coordinator, Victoria Caffaro at vcaffaro@shaw.ca. Families are required to work 2 bingos per Nancy Green skier and 5 per K1/K2 skier. Victoria would like to finalize the schedule by December 15th, so if you could contact her before then, she would appreciate it.  You can switch your dates at a later time if your date does not end up working for you. We will also post the finalized schedule on our website.

Also, just a reminder that everyone must be paid in full by the start date in January. It is important that all skiers and one parent is registered with Alberta Alpine.  If you have not registered as a parent, please contact our Alpine Chair, David Turcot at turcot@telusplanet.net

Newsletter - December 2007

We would like to welcome all the new members and welcome back all the kids and parents who enjoyed the program last year!  We are excited that it will be a great year of skiing and learning again!

Thank you to all the parents who helped with the ski swap. It was a great success and the team made a total of about $7500.

The Jasper Ski Team is comprised of skiers ages 6-14. Ages 6-10 are in the Nancy Greene Ski League, skiers 11&12 are in the K1 Kinder Series, and racers 13&14 are in the K2 Kinder Series. This year we have also introduced a new K1-Lite program.

First day for Nancy Greene 2007-2008

The first official day will be Sunday January  6th  . Kids are to meet by the Jasper Ski Team race shack in the back corner of the first parking lot (building closest to the hill) ready to go at 9:15 am. The kids will be assessed by the coaches and divided into groups according to ability. Skiers can take their lunches in their backpacks and they will drop them off at the mid-mountain chalet.  All Nancy Greene program kids will be given a tallow vest so they are easy to identify on the hill.

The group always has lunch between 12-1pm upstairs in the mid mountain chalet. Parents are encouraged to come and eat with the group, as coaches often eat quickly then go and set up the race course, then come back and pick up the kids. Please be aware that there is at least one child with a severe peanut allergy. Coach Patrice Fortin requests that we try and keep the lunches as healthy as possible.

The groups usually will technical free ski in the morning, then do some fun gates in the afternoon. We can let you know at lunchtime where they will be skiing and you can go and watch.  The groups will be brought back to the first parking lot at 3:00 pm. We ask that parents be prompt picking up your children.
